The Essential History of Home Cleaning Services

What is the history of housekeepingWhat do you think about house cleaning? What a tedious task, isn’t it? You’d rather hire a Studio City-based maid service to spruce up your house than grab a microfiber cloth and wipe greasy surfaces yourself. But do you know when this practice of hiring others to tidy up your home started?

Housekeeping is a thriving industry with a long and dynamic history. It’s as old as civilization itself. Would you like to learn more about it? Check out the article below!

What is the history of housekeeping?

The history of housekeeping began with the origin of the first civilizations, when people became wealthy enough to hire others to take care of their homes. Remember the movies showing numerous servants working in the place of an Egyptian pharaoh or a Roman emperor?

They showed historically accurate details of their lives. However, these servants were mainly enslaved people without any rights. If we take a look at recent history, the term maid pops up. Since the Middle Ages, maids have served as pillars of hygiene for most middle- and upper-class households.

This term means a female servant employed in luxurious palaces, castles, and estates. It comes from the word maiden, which signifies a young and single woman whose main life preoccupation was to serve her employer.

Typically, a maid wasn’t permitted to get married and lived within her employer’s property, where she was provided with clothing and food. She would usually spend her entire life working for her employer and following rigid work etiquette.

Maids were in charge of the household maintenance and performed many chores to ensure everything ran smoothly. They were expected to follow strict rules and each maid knew her scope of duties.

But then came the Industrial Revolution, the First World War, and women’s suffrage. Women started turning their backs on the housekeeping profession as they learned they could have equal rights as men. Many decided to continue their education and wanted to find other jobs and pursue different careers, so the house cleaning industry was on the decline.

However, the housekeeping industry has recently undergone a significant change. It’s gaining popularity again with more and more cleaning companies emerging. These companies either employ their own cleaners or match their clients with reliable professionals.

The growth is pretty impressive. Over the last decade, the cleaning industry in the U.S. has grown an average of 6.6% per year. Some estimates even forecast that the sector will increase by 10% by 2026.

But this comeback introduced many modifications into the industry. Professional cleaners aren’t only women anymore and are definitely not confined to their employers’ households.

This boom is attributed to modern people’s lifestyles. Today, men and women want to focus on their careers and don’t want to waste their free time scrubbing their floors.

That’s why they choose to outsource their upkeep chores to experts who are highly qualified to carry out the tasks safely and efficiently. And many cleaning companies or referral agencies can provide true professionals in the field.

Summertime Activities for the Whole Family

While some parts of the country are already back to school, there are still a couple precious weeks in summer that need enjoying!  We put together a few ideas which work for every size of family.

Volunteer at a Nonprofit

A great lesson that kids can learn (and that adults can always be reminded of) is the importance of giving to those who are less fortunate.  Nonprofits offer many different ways that families can donate their time and energy.  This could mean delivering or serving meals for a local soup kitchen, or running fundraisers for building projects at Habitat for Humanity.  The experience will bond you more closely as a family and lead to useful and helpful discussions.

Run a Lemonade Stand

Lemonade stands have always been popular, but they’ve recently gotten attention both in the for-profit space (Jack’s Lemonade Stands appearing on Shark Tank) and nonprofit (Alex’s Lemonade Stands which donate their profits to fighting childhood cancer).  You don’t have to choose either of these more well-known versions of lemonade stands.  You can simply buy the ingredients for lemonade, put up a stand of your own, and have fun serving people a delicious beverage on a hot day.  As a family you can decide what you’d like to do with the proceeds.

Make Jam or Pickles

While there’s nothing quite as easy to make as lemonade, something that’s also not hard to do is to make some homemade jam and pickles.  You could also give these as gifts to friends and family or just enjoy all the fruits of your labor at home.  Everyone can have a task in the process and everyone can enjoy what’s been made afterwards.

Declutter

Now everyone associates decluttering with Springtime, but there’s nothing to stop you from doing so in the summer.  You could have a garage sale, but you could also just donate items you aren’t using or don’t want anymore.  To incentivize kids (and maybe fellow adults!) to get onboard, set some kind of milestones as rewards, e.g. a trip to the ice cream shop for each box or bag filled with things to donate or get rid of.

Campout

National Parks and other campgrounds are great destinations, but can often be crowded during the summertime.  If you’re looking for a quieter experience that involves no travel time, you can always camp in your backyard.  Getting out of your “normal” environment can be fun for everyone, even if it’s not at a faraway location.

Visit the Library

With the disappearance of many bookstores in the US, there are really few places where adults and kids can wander around stacks of books, choose ones they are interested in, and sit down to look over their choices.  Libraries often have great programs, including lectures and talks, and they often offer wi-fi and air conditioning.  Some libraries also have fun summer reading programs which allow kids to win prizes.

All of the choices we’ve mentioned above are either free, low cost, or offer the chance to make some money.  That’s one more lesson to share with the family this summer, or rather, two lessons: the best things in life are free, and, the best things in life aren’t things.

6 Unusual & Interesting Facts About Cleaning

Do you think that dusting, wiping, and mopping around your home are tedious and time-consuming? It’s why homeowners turn to professional house cleaning services from Studio City to keep their living space tidy.

But, no matter what you think about it, house maintenance is a crucial part of your life. Here are some fun facts about cleaning that can change your perspective. Read on!

Did you know these facts about cleaning?

Hire one of the most reliable house cleaning services from Studio City today

House cleaning is time-consuming and exhausting, and no one really likes it. However, did you know that Americans spend 87% of their time indoors? A tidy house isn’t only a matter of aesthetics; it influences our health too.

Here are some little-known cleaning facts that will inspire you to keep your house pristine all the time.

1. Cleaning is an excellent workout.

When you clean, you burn calories. A two-hour cleaning session can burn 200 calories. If you mop for an hour, you can burn up to 153 calories.

Some tasks require more elbow grease, so you shed calories faster. For instance, if you scrub the tub for 15 minutes, you can burn 90 calories.

So, next time you need to spruce up your house, think of it as a gym session and turn some music on to give you an extra burst of energy.

2. Dead skin cells comprise approximately 70-80% of dust particles.

This fact means that personal hygiene is connected to the tidiness of your house. Also, ensure to stop the circulation of these invisible threats by regularly changing your bedding and dusting the surfaces.

If you have pets, you’ll have to dust, vacuum, and mop more frequently, as pet dander can lower the air quality and cause allergic reactions.

3. The bathroom isn’t the dirtiest room in your house. It’s the kitchen.

The kitchen is the busiest area in your household. Just imagine how much food and how many people circulate there. No wonder it can quickly become a hotbed of various bacteria and viruses.

Tending to its every corner is vital for your family’s well-being as you want to prevent cross-contamination. Make sure to wipe cutting boards, countertops, and inside the fridge, to name just a few tricky areas.

Also, wash your hands before and after preparing the food, and don’t let your trash can overflow with garbage. This is a magnet for rodents and insects.

4. Toilet seats contain fewer germs than kitchen sinks.

Just think of what you use your sink for, and it’ll be clear why it’s the most germ-ridden area in your household.  And the only way to get rid of dangerous microbes is to clean the kitchen sink regularly.

The safest way to do it is to use baking soda and white vinegar. First, spread baking soda over the sink and rub it with a soft sponge. Then, pour white vinegar over the entire sink and wait. There’s going to be a fizzing reaction. Once it stops, rinse thoroughly.

5. Doorknobs are one of the most contaminated surfaces in your home.

How many times do you and other people touch the doorknobs in your house? You can’t even count. This is what makes doorknobs a breeding ground for numerous pathogens. So disinfecting them is essential in establishing a healthy home environment.

6. House cleaning is a thriving industry.

House cleaning has a lengthy history, but recently it’s experienced a real boom.  According to some statistics, the cleaning industry has grown at an average rate of 6.6 percent annually over the last decade. Some estimates predict that the cleaning industry will increase by 10 percent by 2026.

All this has led to clearly defined standards and terms that refer to numerous cleaning techniques and services.

10 Books That Will Help You Be More Productive in 2022

We’re almost done with the first quarter of the year and, as always, it’s flown by.  How productive have we been, and how productive would we like to be?  There are lots of great books out there to help, each offering mindsets and tactics that all of us could use.  We decided to put together a quick list of ten of our favorites for you to pick from.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

It’s a classic for a reason.  What this book has become legendary for is less about specific tactics (though there are plenty) and more about mindset, about getting your priorities in order.  There’s no point in being productive if you don’t know what you’re being productive for.

The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss

There are plenty of times you’ll pause while reading the 4 Hour Work Week to say to yourself, “you did what?”  Tim Ferriss has pitched himself as a human guinea pig and many people have benefited from the experiments he has conducted on himself.

One part of the book that has ended up becoming a popular product is a journal, a practice that Ferriss championed long before it was cool.

The War of Art by Stephen Pressfield

One of the shortest books on the list, Pressfield puts his finger on the “resistance,” the siren song that is always calling you away from what you need to get done.  Sometimes productivity doesn’t mean systems and tactics, it means simply being aware that your mind and body often want to do other things, and it takes discipline to stay on track.  That’s productivity too.

Deep Work by Cal Newport

Multitasking has long lost its allure, as studies and people have realized it’s a lie.  Newport goes further in this book by pointing out that setting aside just a bit of time every day for uninterrupted work is a powerful tactic for getting a lot done.

The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

Productivity feeds off routines and habits, and Duhigg points to a three-step loop: cue, routine, reward, to help people form habits.  The better you understand how to create habits (and break bad ones), the easier it will be for you to maintain those that help you get stuff done.

Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod

Not a morning person?  Willing to be convinced?  That’s the premise of Hal Elrod’s book.  He explains how he converted to being a morning person, adding routines that launched each day, changing his life.

Getting Things Done by David Allen

Another classic text, Allen’s book offers an interesting idea, that the mind is for having ideas, not holding them, so make sure you have something to collect anything that comes to your mind, whether that’s a notebook or an app on your phone.

If you want to get in the weeds with productivity, Allen’s got you covered, with an entire chapter on how to organize your desk.

Essentialism by Greg McKeown

It took having to choose between being near his wife as she was about to give birth and making it to a client meeting that made Greg McKeown realize he was doing it all wrong.  Those realizations led to a book that hammers home the message that most of what many of us do in life is not essential, taking us away from the things that truly matter, that are essential.

Atomic Habits by James Clear

The idea that so many people share from Atomic Habits is the idea that every time you engage in a habit is a vote you cast for the type of life you want to live.  Like Duhigg’s book we already mentioned, the book focuses on habits, which are the foundation of any routine of productivity.

How to Clean Faucets & Shower Fixtures Like a Pro

How do you clean tarnished shower fixturesWhat would be the least enjoyable chore in your house cleaning routine? Definitely, dealing with those unattractive faucets or discolored shower fixtures. With a household full of people, traces of soap, shampoo, and toothpaste easily stick to these areas and seem so difficult to remove.

Fortunately, with the right method, you can clean almost anything. To help you do just that, we’ve prepared a list of clever hacks that Loz Feliz-based maid service professionals use on a regular basis to make even the dirtiest faucets and shower fixtures shine. Read on!

What is the best way to clean faucets?

Since you don’t want to damage your faucets, always check the manufacturer’s instructions on the type of faucet finish you’re dealing with first. Chrome faucets are the most common and are pretty straightforward to clean, but some other types require special care.

Dish soap and warm water

In most cases, dish soap and warm water are ideal for cleaning your faucets. Simply add a few drops of dish soap into warm water and apply the solution to the faucet. Pay special attention to the edges where the faucet and the sink meet, as much dirt accumulates there. You can use a soft toothbrush to scrub the area gently.

After you’ve rinsed everything, wipe it off and dry with a clean cloth to prevent water spotting and to buff the shine.

Distilled white vinegar for hardened dirt

If dish soap and warm water don’t give the desired results, you should mix equal parts white vinegar and water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Before applying it to the entire faucet, spray on an inconspicuous spot first to double-check if white vinegar is safe for the finish.

If you don’t notice any changes, spray lavishly onto the entire surface. Again, a soft toothbrush can come in handy for dealing with the edges of the faucet. Rinse and wipe dry for a sparking faucet.

How do you clean tarnished shower fixtures?

Again, it’s important to check the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions first. The optimal shower fixture cleaning method depends on the fixture material. For instance, if you have chrome or stainless steel shower fixtures, you can restore their initial beauty with vinegar solution.

Due to its acidity, vinegar is one of the gentlest abrasives for removing tarnish. You can mix one part vinegar and one part water and spray it onto the fixtures. If possible, pour the vinegar solution into a plastic bag and submerge the fixture into it and leave it for a few hours (ideally overnight).

Then, scrub carefully with a non-abrasive sponge or a soft cloth. Use a toothbrush for tiny crevices and other hard-to-reach areas. Rinse and dry with a clean cloth to bring its shine back. However, if you have fixtures with oil-rubbed bronze or brass finishes, you should use only water.

Pro tips

  1. Don’t use abrasive cleaning tools as they can scratch the finish. A soft sponge or a microfiber cloth would be a great choice.
  2. Also, avoid harsh cleaning chemicals that can endanger your health and ruin your surfaces.

Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Grout

What is the best thing to use for cleaning groutDo you usually neglect grout while tidying up your home? Your priority is the greasy countertops and messy fridge, right? And then after some time, you suddenly notice your grout has lost its initial color and shine.

This can ruin the look of your bathroom and kitchen, and it’s also a potential health threat since bacteria can get trapped in these crevices. So, roll up your sleeves, and let’s make the grout in your Los Feliz home sparkle again with these easy house cleaning tips. Keep reading to learn more!

What is the best thing to use for cleaning grout?

If you’re looking for the best solution for your grimy and unattractive grout, you don’t need to rush to the store and waste money on commercial products that can potentially endanger your health.

The most efficient cleaning agents are probably already in your house. They’re baking soda, white vinegar, and lemons. Here’s why:

Baking soda

Baking soda is a popular eco-friendly cleaner, deodorizer, and whitener. It’s highly versatile as it combats limescale efficiently, and removes dirt from various surfaces, including sinks, countertops, and much more. Its mildly abrasive properties allow it to clean grout lines without scratching your tiles.

White vinegar

Distilled white vinegar is another natural cleaner that’s ideal for various cleaning challenges. For instance, it makes your tarnished faucets shiny again. On top of that, it doesn’t leave any dangerous residues, and you can use it safely around your kids and pets.

It’s also a mild disinfectant that can kill some food-related bacteria, including E-Coli and Salmonella, so you can use it for sanitizing your fridge. It can also remove grime, mildew, and soap residue from non-porous tile surfaces. If the vinegar smell bothers you, simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to mask it.

Lemons

Who doesn’t like the smell of fresh lemons? Lemon juice is extremely acidic, and it can remove stubborn stains and discolorations from grout in no time.

How do I clean my grout at home?

Now that you know what to use to deal with your unsightly grout at home, you can use it with one of our three favorite grout-cleaning methods:

Method No.1: Treating grout with a baking soda paste

Add baking soda and several drops of dish soap to the water and make a paste. Cover the grout with the paste, and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. Grab a toothbrush and scrub the grout gently and rinse. Finally, grab a clean cloth and dry.

How do I clean my grout at homeMethod No. 2: White vinegar solution for grime-free grout

Pour some undiluted vinegar directly onto the grout, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Use a toothbrush to scrub it in a circular motion. Rinse and dry with a clean cloth.

Method No.3: Lemon juice to return the grout’s initial beauty

Squeeze a few lemons to make some lemon juice. Next, let the lemon juice soak into the grout for 15 minutes or so. Then get a damp cloth and wipe your grout and tiles. After rinsing the treated area, dry it with a cloth or towel.

Does It Spark Joy? 6 Reasons Why Marie Kondo Knows What She’s Talking About

It’s been years since Marie Kondo wrote her now famous Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and a little while since her Netflix series which led to thrift shops getting deluged with donations.  There’s not a new book out (or a new TV series) but her ideas continue to circulate, with plenty of official and unofficial “KonMari” consultants offering to help you go through and sort your stuff.  Yet, with all her success, some people still continue to resist her ideas and experience.  With all our experience visiting and cleaning homes, we wanted to share our perspectives on why we think Marie knows what she’s talking about.

1. Method to the Madness

Just talking about decluttering and sorting our things sounds exhausting and stressful.  That’s why Marie’s method is so helpful.  It doesn’t require you to do everything in one day but still allows you to build momentum.  Instead of going room by room, she has you work in categories.

For example, she recommends starting with clothes.  You would grab all the clothing from all over the house and bring it into several piles.  You then work through all those clothes with a simple “keep” or “donate/give away” mentality.  This doesn’t mean that this task won’t be challenging or time consuming, but it does mean that once you’ve completed it, you’ll be able to check the clothes box off your list and will start the snowball of momentum you’ll need to keep going through other categories, like books, paper, sentimental items, etc.

2. Joy: Sparked

There’s a tremendous mental load that makes many people avoid dealing with the decluttering issue altogether.  Marie is challenging people to think about the objects they have in a way that they are not used to: do they spark joy?  This phrase that she has become known for can polarize people, as they mistakenly think it means that you have to have strong emotional feelings about the things you want to keep, but part of what she’s really pointing to is the place the object occupies in our lives at this moment.

Perhaps it’s a book you once wanted to read but no longer have interest in.  Or it’s a jacket you thought would look good when you bought it but have never worn.  Whatever the object, you should feel a desire to use/keep it, and often that will manifest as contentment or joy when you see it.

3. “Key” Tips

Something we see many of our clients do that makes a lot of sense not just in a vacation rental, but in a regular home, is to have a consistent “place” for everything.  Keys always go in the same place, or all tools go in a certain drawer, or all office supplies are found on a certain shelf.

Such routines not only prevent losing items, but they allow us to see if we have unnecessary duplicates that can be more useful to someone else.

4. Method for Maintenance

Once you’ve gone through a full KonMari decluttering, you have the template for maintenance: periodically do it again on a schedule that makes sense to you.  Maybe that’s as frequent as once a quarter or as rare as once a year or every two years.  Once you’ve done it once, you know that maintenance will only take a fraction of that time.

5. Challenges Our Relationship With Stuff

The reality is that owning things doesn’t just take up physical space, it takes up mental real estate as well.  The fewer things that we can own, the more mental real estate we can free up for more important things.

Marie’s not against having stuff.  She’s against having things you don’t care about, need, or want.  She wants to empower you to dump those things.

6. Happiness Matters

Sometimes we can get intellectual or abstract about happiness and forget the joy that comes from wearing a t-shirt that has a special memory attached to it, or from using a wallet that has a design that you love, or from re-reading a favorite dog-eared book for the umpteenth time.  The things we own don’t have to own us.  We can leverage them to add bits of happiness to our everyday lives.

You don’t have to agree with everything Marie Kondo preaches, but a lot of her advice is worth trying at least once.  In all likelihood, you’ll be glad you did.

How to Get Rid of Limescale Around Your House

What home remedy gets rid of limescale

Have trouble with limescale? You’ve probably noticed it around your faucets, in your sinks, and on your showerhead. It may have even found its way into your coffeemaker and dishwasher. Well, the truth is, whatever comes into regular contact with hard water eventually becomes covered in this white residue.

Limescale is not only unsightly but can also affect the performance of your appliances, maid service providers from Los Feliz warn. That’s why it should never be neglected during your house cleaning routine. Luckily, it’s treatable. Check out these cool limescale removal hacks. Read on!

What home remedy gets rid of limescale?

While limescale is difficult to deal with, some natural substances you have in your house will solve this problem.

  1. White vinegar. Its acidity combats limescale successfully. It can wipe off this chalky layer from your facets, descale your showerhead and coffeemaker, and so on.
  2. Baking soda. To reap the most benefits, combine it with white vinegar. This combo will start a bubbling reaction that will remove all sorts of hardened dirt.
  3. Lemon. It contains citric acids, which fight limescale efficiently.

How do you remove hard limescale?

Here are some tricks on how to get rid of hard limescale around your house.

Showerhead

If your showerhead gets clogged because of a heavy limescale build-up, grab some white vinegar. Pour it in a plastic sandwich bag. Dip your showerhead into it, and use a rubber band to ensure you don’t spill the vinegar. Leave it overnight, and wipe it clean the next day.

You can also cut a lemon in half and rub it on your showerhead. Let it sit for an hour, and then scrub with a toothbrush, making sure to unclog the holes.

Faucet

White vinegar and lemon are excellent at treating limescale around your faucet too. You can pour white vinegar on it or rub some lemon. Again, do it very carefully, as you want to cover every nook and cranny. Let the white vinegar/lemon do its job for half an hour. Scrub clean with a microfiber cloth.

Shower/bathtub

How do you remove hard limescale

Make a paste by mixing 2 parts baking soda with 1 part white vinegar and apply to areas soiled due to excessive exposure to hard water. For best results, leave for 10 minutes and wipe with a sponge.

Toilet

Pour plenty of white vinegar into the toilet. Add some vinegar to a spray bottle and apply it under the toilet rim. Let it sit for an hour (ideally overnight). Scrub with a toilet brush once the limescale has dissolved. Then flush the toilet several times.

Coffeemaker

White vinegar does wonders for your coffeemaker. Add equal parts white vinegar and water into the water chamber. Turn on the coffeemaker. Switch off the appliance halfway through, and let the solution sit for an hour or so. Then finish off the cycle and run another water cycle to rinse the coffeemaker. Repeat if necessary to neutralize the pungent vinegar scent.

Dishwasher

White vinegar is the magical substance you need. Simply add two cups of white vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher. Next, run the hottest cycle without any detergent. Finally, run another hot water cycle to eliminate the vinegar smell.

How to Have a Sparkling Kitchen Sink All the Time

How do I get my sink to shine again

Look at your kitchen sink. You aren’t impressed by what you see, are you? There are some unsightly smudges, and you can only see traces of its original shine. How did that happen? Well, you should always keep an eye on your kitchen sink because, if neglected, it can easily become a paradise for germs.

So how can you keep your kitchen sink neat? Experts in house cleaning from Los Feliz are there to help! Today, they offer valuable advice on how to make your sink look squeaky clean all-year-round. Read on!

What is the best thing to clean a sink with?

When it comes to kitchen sink maintenance, you should distinguish between daily and weekly cleaning. Consider the following:

Daily cleaning

To keep your kitchen sink hygienic, you need to wash it after every use. For this purpose, you’ll need some dish soap, a soft sponge, and a few dry microfiber cloths.

Dish soap is a special kind of soap that contains high-foaming surfactants. These compounds reduce the tension between two liquids, between a gas and a liquid, or between a liquid and a solid.

That’s why dish soap is an effective degreaser that can be used for many surfaces, including your sink. On top of that, it’s environmentally friendly and doesn’t leave any toxic residue.

Your daily kitchen sink cleaning routine should include:

  1. Rinse the sink with hot water, and then add a few drops of dish soap onto a slightly wet soft sponge.
  2. Wipe your sink with it. Pay attention to all the crevices, especially around the drain and garbage disposal stoppers, and where the sink meets the counter. Make sure to tend to the faucet too.
  3. Finally, rinse everything and wipe with a dry microfiber cloth.

Weekly maintenance

Once a week, give your sink a baking soda and white vinegar treatment. Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that can remove gunk and dislodge greasy residues. It also eliminates odors and helps keep your sink drain fresh-smelling.

In addition to being a natural cleaner, distilled white vinegar is also a disinfectant, and you can use it on sinks and many other surfaces around your house. Baking soda and white vinegar combo will make your sink sparkle again. So let’s see what the entire process entails.

How do I get my sink to shine again?

What is the best thing to clean a sink with

To make your sink look new again, follow this simple guide:

  1. Starting from the top, rinse the whole sink with hot water.
  2. Spread baking soda all over the wet sink and the faucet area.
  3. Scrub the surfaces gently in the direction of the grain, following the sink faint lines. Make sure to reach every nook and cranny, including the drain opening.
  4. Pour white vinegar over the baking soda and wait. Baking soda and white vinegar will start to react, and you’ll notice some bubbling and fizzing.
  5. Once it stops, rinse thoroughly with hot water.
  6. Grab a clean microfiber cloth and dry.

Extra tips

  • You can follow the above steps to deal with your grimy bathroom sink too.
  • If your sink is made of porcelain, copper, granite, or cast iron sink, skip white vinegar and baking soda. Instead, wash your sink with dish soap and water.

4 Ways to Stay Active Without Setting Foot in a Gym

One of the realities of modern life is that we have to actually find ways to stay active.  There were no such things as gyms in times past because people got exercise simply by going about their daily lives, whether that was working in the fields or walking to and from town.  Today our lives are so simple, so engineered for comfort, that we have to take a little bit of effort to make sure we don’t send up like those human blobs in Wall-E.

Walk

We’ve gotta start with this one.  Walking gets mentioned by famous inventors and authors as ways that they started thinking about an idea or got an insight.  Walking lets you get outside (yes, even when the weather is really unpleasant!).  Walking tells your body to get the blood flowing, we’ve got work to do!

You don’t need to walk for miles and miles, but you’ll be amazed at how much you can walk simply by taking a break once or twice a day.  Pop in some headphones if you want to catch up on your reading or podcasts, or try silent mode to just be alone with your thoughts, something we so rarely let ourselves do these days.

Take the Stairs

Once again, there’s nothing wrong with elevators (especially when you’ve got luggage!).  But stairs will still get you where you want to go, don’t involve any waiting time, and allow you to get a little bit of exertion and exercise.  Remember that those opportunities have been removed from our daily lives so we have to consciously add some back in.

You can take the stairs at whatever pace you want, just remember when you want to grumble that your body is thanking you, no matter what signals your brain is angrily telegraphing.

Do Bodyweight Exercises

One of the fundamentals of training in most armed forces around the world is the use of your body for exercise.  These are simple movements like pushups, pullups, squats, etc.  This makes sense because taking barbells into combat would be the dumbest idea ever, but also because there’s no friction to “set up” to work out.

You might set an alarm once or twice a day to do a mini-set of these body weight exercises, e.g. ten push-ups and ten pull-ups or ten sit-ups and ten squats.  Remember that it’s not about quantity or training for the Olympics, but about taking care of your body so it can take care of you.

Use Equipment

There are a few pieces of “equipment” that you can have in your home that can deliver a powerful punch.  These could be barbells and kettle bells, jump rope, or the aforementioned pull up bar.

Sometimes we have to trick ourselves into being active by making it more convenient.  This might be the most difficult of the four ways we’ve listed here as it does take a bit more discipline, but it’s still easier than going to the gym.

This isn’t to say you shouldn’t step into a gym.  We’re just saying the gym isn’t the only place you can be active, and if you make being active a place you go to instead of a lifestyle you live, it’s that much easier to put off being active…while reaching for those Cheetos.  Beware!
